South Sudan Police Service has on Monday released journalist Diing Magot one week after her arrest while covering a peaceful protest over high cost of living at Konyo Konyo Market in Juba on the 7th of August.
After her release on Monday, the Union of Journalists of South Sudan, a body responsible for the protection of journalists in South Sudan confirmed in its official page.
“Journalist Diing Magot has just been released from Malakia Police Station. UJOSS thanks its President Oyet Patrick and the team, South Sudan journalists including members from other media stakeholders for the solidarity,” UJOSS official facebook page confirmed.
The President of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) Mr. Oyet Patrick Charles assured journalists in Juba on Thursday that their colleague Diing Magot would be released on Thursday or on Friday however the bail out letter was submitted late to the prosecutor and the her release was pushed to Monday (today).
Diing was arrested by the police at Konyo Konyo Market in Juba on Sunday 7 while covering a peaceful protest by the youths over high inflation in the market. At the time of her arrest she had no work ID as well as UJOSS identification card.
According to Oyet, Magot will be regularly called for further investiagations until all investigations are done.
“The release of Diing does not mean that she is totally free. She will still be called to the police because inveestigations are not yet over,” added Oyet.
Asked about the physical health of the journalist, Oyet said Diing was physically fine at the time of her release, but recommends that UJOSS would look for means of sending her to neighboring countries for trauma healing.
Diing was released on Monday along with 7 other protestors who were jailed with her on the same matter.
