The Project for Strengthening Media for the Promotion of Freedom of Expression and Access to Information reached an important milestone with the successful convening of its first Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) Meeting during a media tour and training program in Japan from July 20 – 31.
The delegation brought together representatives from the Ministry of ICT and Postal Services, UJOSS, and AMDISS. The tour provided a valuable platform for participants to gain insights from Japan’s media sector, exchange experiences, and strengthen partnerships aimed at fostering a more professional, vibrant, and independent media landscape in South Sudan.
In his closing remarks, Hon. Arok Dut Arok, Undersecretary for Information and Head of Mission, expressed appreciation to JICA for its unwavering support to media development in South Sudan. He emphasized that the knowledge and skills acquired during the visit to Japan would contribute to advancing freedom of expression and improving access to information across the country. Both UJOSS’ President Mr. Oyet Patrick and AMDISS’ Director Ms. Ayaa Irene pledged their full commitment to the project.

During the JCC meeting, stakeholders endorsed key project implementation arrangements, including the Project Design Matrix (PDM), the composition of the Joint Coordination Committee, and the roadmap of planned activities. These agreements laid a strong foundation for effective coordination and successful implementation of the project.
Closing the meeting, Dr. Keiichi Hashimoto, Senior Advisor at JICA, encouraged stakeholders to address challenges facing freedom of expression and access to information through sustained collaboration and practical action. Hon. Moyiga Nduru, Chairperson of Access to Information Commission, called for stronger cooperation among media institutions and appealed for JICA’s continued support in advancing media development in South Sudan.
